Memoirs--not the ghosted celebrity tell-alls, but those produced by interesting people who can actually write well and have stories worth telling--are some of my favorite reading. Below is a list of some I've enjoyed. This list isn't in any particular order. Nor is it comprehensive. I'll add to it as more titles occur to me.
Back Then -- Anne Bernays and Justin Kaplan
Sleeping with Cats -- Marge Piercy
Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady -- Florence King
Another Life -- Michael Korda
My Life in France -- Julia Child (Child has a co-author, but the narrative voice is so clearly hers that it can't be considered an "as told to" work.)
Palimpsest -- Gore Vidal
Tender at the Bone -- Ruth Reichl
At Home in the World -- Joyce Maynard
Black Ice -- Lorene Cary
Kitchen Confidential -- Anthony Bourdain
A Glutton for Punishment -- Jay Jacobs
Growing Up Underground -- Jane Alpert
As I glance over this list, I'm struck by how many of these memoirs are written by foodies.
